Can Exercise Be Done When Air Pollution Is Severe, Even with Haze?

Exercise can be selectively done under such circumstances. It is essential to consider the severity of haze and make choices regarding exercise locations and types. Exercising outdoors during poor air quality can lead to permanent damage to respiratory function and other health issues. Therefore, it is crucial to monitor the air quality regularly and choose different exercise locations and types accordingly.

Methods for Selecting Exercise Locations and Types under Different Air Quality Conditions

Moderate Air Quality

Outdoor exercise is possible, but sensitive individuals with weak constitution, allergies, or in the early stages of recovery from illnesses should closely monitor their physical reactions. If any adverse feelings arise, outdoor exercise should be stopped immediately.

Mild Pollution

Reduce outdoor exercise and shift to indoor exercise.

Moderate to Severe Pollution

Avoid outdoor exercise and focus on indoor exercises that do not cause rapid breathing and heart rate acceleration (e.g., balance, flexibility, and agility exercises). If necessary, exercise can even be omitted. Additionally, if indoor exercise is performed, longer rest intervals between each set of exercises should be implemented to minimize the extent of increased heart rate and breathing, reducing the intake of polluted air.
